A Princess of Mars – Edgar Rice Burroughs

Her name is Dejah Thoris and she is princess of the Martian city-state/empire of Helium. She also ends up becoming the wife of John Carter, an Earthman who is teleported (don’t ask us how) to Mars, and who gives his name to a whole saga created in 1917 by the writer Edgar Rice Burroughs.

«A Princess of Mars» was the first volume of a whole collection of stories that are pure Martian pulp.

Although on many occasions, this Martian princess is the typical «girl who saves the boy», very typical of the sexist vision of many stories of that time, Burroughs also presents her as an adventurer capable of defending herself and surviving on her own in the wastelands of Mars.

These characters were made into a film in 2012 with disastrous results both commercially and critically.
