In 1996, director Tim Burton directed this film based on the “Topps” trading card series of the same name released in 1962.
With many film stars and a huge amount of black humour, it recreates the fear of an alien invasion, once again. Of course, the Martians are green, big-headed, have a very bad temper, and a distinctive voice (the reverse a recording of a duck quacking).
The special effects were commissioned to Industrial Light & Magic, who created the Martians using computer animation, after discarding the original idea of using stop motion.
It was released in the United States on 13 December 1996 and was a minor critical and box-office failure, but it contains mythical scenes in the Martian filmography, such as the Martians’ welcome in «peace», or the surprising and musical final terrestrial weapon.
The stupendous soundtrack was composed by Burton’s regular collaborator, Danny Elfman.
