In 1972, a bisexual, androgynous-looking, rock-star alien lands on Earth to reveal to its inhabitants that they have only five years left before the planet disappears. For this reason he decides to become a «rock messiah» and save us, although he ends up a victim of his own success. His name is Ziggy Stardust, and behind him is one of the most innovative and brilliant musicians in recent history: David Bowie.
This bizarre story is told in the concept album «The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars», one of the best albums of the British singer’s career and one of the most acclaimed in rock history. It contains such iconic tracks in Bowie’s career as «Starman» and «Ziggy Stardust».
To create this alter ego, Bowie drew on Japanese kabuki theatre, mixed with aspects of science fiction. The result, an iconic image of 1970s glam rock. A year earlier, Bowie had popularised another song in which he wondered if there is life on Mars?
